Molecular testing for water borne pathogens

Symbio offers wide range of rapid molecular testing for water borne pathogens including Legionella, Vibrio and Campylobacter spp. These multiplex real-time PCR methods offer rapid, high throughput and automated solutions to screen for pathogens in water and environmental samples.

Speciation of Giardia & Cryptosporidium

Based on fluorescent in-situ hybridisation (FISH) technique, Symbio is able to speciate and determine the origin of (oo)cyst/s of Giardia and Cryptosporidium. This method speciate Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium hominis (most commonly involved in human cryptosporidiosis) and also differentiates Giardia duodenalis (SYN= G.lamblia & G.intestinalis) Group A and Group B genotypes from other Giardia assemblages.

Microbial Source Tracking

Microbial Source Tracking (MST) solution offered by Symbio uses Bacteroides spp as an indicator of faecal contamination in water. This method offers culture independent approach to amplify bacteria to a quantifiable level to assess the contamination level. The use of species-specific Bacteroides markers (human, dog, cow, chicken etc.) in these analyses can determine the actual source of contamination in the source water.

E.coli Phylogrouping

Symbio also perform Phylogenetic analysis for E.coli to establish host-source relationship. This method identifies the phylogroup (A, B1, B2, C, D, E, F, cryptic Clade 1) of isolated E.coli and helps to determine the source of contamination in a water sample (animal or human).  Whole genome sequencing on these isolates can also provide in depth insights to specific E.coli characteristics.
